  • Basic Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required or equivalent experience.

     

    Department of Defense security clearance is not required at time of hire. Applicants selected may eventually be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

     

    Succesful completion of a background check and drug screen is required.

    Responsibilities for this Position

    General Dynamics Mission Systems in Cullman, Alabama, has an immediate opening for an Entry-level Optical Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.

     

    REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:

    • Designs, develops, builds and tests optics and optical systems
    • Interacts with manufacturing to assist in overall development / build of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation
    • May provide recommendations for cost reduction efforts
    • Participates in optical and mechanical requirements analysis, functional analysis, performance analysis, design, integration and verification of optical components and assemblies 
    • Applies principles and techniques of Optical Engineering
    • Performs optical engineering root cause analysis for issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues
    • Participates in internal optical reviews of optical components, equipment and systems
    • Evaluates vendor capability to support product development
    • Applies a basic understanding of the organizationally defined optical processes used throughout the lifecycle of the program or project
    • Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
    • Generally works with interdisciplinary teams and multiple work groups
    • Generally has contact with project leaders and Program Managers
    • May have some contact with external customers

     

     

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Working knowledge of optical engineering concepts, principles, and theories
    • Working knowledge of optical engineering processes
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
    • Tolerances for manufacturing and optical alignments
    • Working knowledge of optical engineering design tools including Zemax, TracePro and SigFit
    • Good written and verbal communications skills
    • Creative thinker
    • Ability to work well in a team environment
    • Ability to work in a test and manufacturing environment
    • Travel may be required
